Critique 2

This painting is by Michael Pattison. It was his first music painting ever, and he donated it to his parents.
The focal point of this image is the colors with the lines that portray great energy and movement. In the center of the painting, there are two people and a piano. One person is playing the piano while the other person seems to be directing the music. Most of this picture is in black. Subtle changes in the shades of black are visible. The lines displayed in this painting are in warm colors. There are different values of red, white, yellow, and orange, which are colors seen in fire. The use of those colors portrays the passion and energy in the painting. The lines move away and then back at the piano, putting the emphasis on both men and the instrument. The random lines going upward into the black look like sparks from a fire. This also brings attention to the energy. The colors contrast and are chiaroscuro. The instrument and the people themselves are displayed with little to no detail and color. This highlights it even more since they are in front of the fiery lines. Even though this image is wild, passionate, and full of energy, there is still harmony in it. The lines that come from the source of the music put great emphasis on the emotions and also show us what kind of music is being played.
This picture might at first seem to not have a narrative, but by looking at it with more caution, the viewer will be able to find a subtle one. This picture portrays two people, in an open field, at night. One of the men is playing the piano while the other one is directing it. They know each other very well, and they are good at making music together. They are most likely brothers and have been through many difficult times in their lives. Music is how they portray their feelings. They put all their passion and energy into it.

Art Critique 1

Midnight Madness

This image by western artist Virgil C. Stephens is an original oil paint. It is currently being sold on his webpage. The artist’s growing up on a ranch in Arizona has a great contribution to his talent in art, which his also portrayed in "Midnight Madness". He greatly enjoys the painting of musical art.
The colors in this picture are chosen very carefully. On the outside they are dark, and they get lighter the further you move in, up until it’s white in the center. There are many different shades of blue represented in this painting. The background is very inconsistent. The first thing you notice when looking at the image is the piano and the keys. The movement of these is emphasized by the drawing of lines around them. This also gives the picture a certain rhythm. The keys are also emphasized by the subtle darker colors around them. The keys are unproportional to the piano itself, which conveys a feeling of them moving toward the viewer. Even though this painting delivers the feeling of energy, confusion, and excitement, it still has a harmony in it that is smoothing. Also, the piano and its keys are being personalized by its distortion and its apparent movement.
Though there are several questions in the viewers mind, there is one major one. What music is associated with this picture? Most people would come to the conclusion that it is something allegro and rather dramatic due to the displayed movement. What is the story behind the picture? What is the reason for the happiness and energy shown in it? Is it playing something classical like Mozart, or maybe something modern like Queen? These are all things running through a viewers head.

Pictures

Here are some pictures that I'd like to put in my concept folio.

My concept

I'm most likely doing my concept on emotions. I might change it a little and specify on one or two emotions, or maybe emotions expressed in or through music or something like that.
